Grapes and Photos

I accumulate a lot of photos as I look for images for paintings. Through the years of painting and designing things, I've learned to love photos too. (And I have the good fortune to be married to an excellent photographer.)

I was looking through my catalog of photos yesterday and found one of a bunch of grapes. I think I shot this up at my sister-in-law's home in Pennsylvania. I can't remember for sure. So I thought I would mess with it a bit. First I used some standard Photoshop filters, then I added a bit of text as a headline.

To finish it off, I needed something to explain it, or give it some resolution. So I did a quick search of quotes that involved grapes. I found a nice one by E. B. White. "We should all do what, in the long run, gives us joy, even if it is only picking grapes or sorting the laundry."

I like that. So here is the finished design.

I found another image I like. This one is from a construction site near my home. I like how the mud breaks off and leaves the well-worn, and shining metal behind. As I recall, my Tonka trucks didn't last so well when left in the mud and sand.

A close-up of my bicycle gears. Plus, a rather funny quote attributed to Mark Twain.

One of my first photos taken with a DSLR camera, a few years ago. I do not remember what lens I used, but it was a zoom of some sort. So I was able to get good focus on the bird, with the background out of focus. I enhanced this effect with Photoshop.

The bird is the expert.

Managing Content

Through the years I have learned a lot about HTML, CSS, Javascript and jQuery. And I've applied them all to front-end designs for web pages, web applications and portal pages and articles.

(You can see a lot of examples by clicking the links on the right side of my regular site: www.robertjcoe.com)

I have always been interested in using a content management system to control my sites.

At my job at Nielsen Audio (formerly Arbitron) we use a content management system (Liferay) for our customer portal. It's great for me because I can design components and articles for it, I can choose when to have content appear and disappear, and I can add content from anywhere I have an internet connection, from a computer, tablet or phone.
